My Life as a Music Peddler:

It is my experience that music comes to us when we are ready to receive it.

I might hear of a band or artist for weeks and months years even and never listen to their music until one day, there it is, the timing is right and it all falls into place.

For me music does not reside in the background.  It's all around me all the time and I’m always listening, aware of what is playing everywhere, at the restaurant, the grocery store, doctor’s office, a friend’s house or car, waiting in line. I listen closely. I think about it, let it draw me in emotionally. I invest.

When I discover an artist and they have a large catalog to explore I want to hear all of it from the beginning right up to the present and back again. I want to read the liner notes, who the players are, the producers and who wrote the songs and where they were recorded. I make connections to other albums and musicians. It’s fun. It adds depth. Tim and I talked about these connections all day everyday, we spent hours and hours exploring music. There is always more to know about creative people and the art that they make.

I have a friend who is learning to play guitar. He’s done some research and discovered musicians to admire, he’s listening closely and watching. He is also moving from the house he’s lived in for over twenty-seven years. He is packing up dishes saying goodbye to people and places. He stumbled upon a song that made a connection lyrically and musically too, “L.A Freeway” by Guy Clark, it talks about getting away from the rat race for a simpler lifestyle, trading concrete for a dirt back road. I've sold and moved around Guy Clark's records for years but for some reason I never took the time to really listen to him seriously. My friend and I listened to “L.A. Freeway” together and through this shared interaction I heard Guy Clark with fresh ears.

Groovacious has always carried books to sell, beat poetry, literature, music books and biographies. With Guy Clark on the brain I was interested to see that my distributor stocked the new biography “Without Getting Killed Or Caught – The Life and Music of Guy Clark” by Tamara Saviano published through Texas A&M University Press. I ordered a some for stock and one for myself too.  I finished reading it this morning. Guy Clark led an interesting life deeply immersed in music and art. He was a massive influence on just about every single songwriter including many many many of my favorites. My paths and that of Guy Clark have crossed several times through the people we have met and known in our lives yet I never met him, didn't ever even see him play. Maybe Tim did. Tim didn't tell me about all of the musicians he ever met or saw.

Interesting how music comes to us. Guy Clark is my latest obsession. He’s got a nice full sized catalog to explore and I am ready.

Groovacious Records Best Sellers and Weekly Blast of Music Art Nature Happenings in Cedar City, Utah

Hello Music Friends.

Lisa from Groovacious/Groovefest saying hello, it’s been awhile.

This is the revival of The Groovacious Weekly Blast kept by Tim Cretsinger for over ten years.
There are things to inform you of; new releases, best sellers, special sales and events.
I have missed Tim’s weekly blast that tended towards things I was most interested in.
Tim was a supreme promoter of our community, tirelessly devoted to gathering people together through music, art and nature and serving musicians, artists and craftsmen of all types by providing a welcoming space with opportunity for them to improve and explore. He did this through Groovefest which began as our store’s birthday celebration in 1992 and became our music festival when we moved to Utah in 2000. He did this over many years and upon the many stages at our record store and elsewhere.
Groovacious no longer has the big stage as in our previous locations but modifications can be made. As I feel more energy things will change.
Coming to terms with the huge loss of my dear Tim has been the biggest challenge of my entire life. I struggle daily… Claiming some of what he loved and called his own, his tasks and precious things and expressions of who he was, what he believed in and lived for has not been easy nor my choice but simply out of the necessity to keep my livelihood intact. It is truly a miracle that I didn’t loose it all.

Like most creative endeavors this version of The Groovacious Weekly Blast will evolve. I will try to be punctual and consistent a policy Tim & I were adamant about. Thankfully the traditions and style that Tim created are a solid foundation for me to build upon.

I miss Tim.
We had plans.
Thank you Tim.
I love you.

Hello Groovacious Friends - Where to Go From Here ?

It's been almost two years since Tim wrote a blog entry for our Groovacious News blog. He died March 14, 2016 and I've been in a state of shock ever since.

Our blog consisted of our best music sellers for each week, new releases to be aware of, events and activities taking place at our record store and in promoting music and art happenings in our area including our yearly music festival Groovefest. Tim spent countless hours every week compiling this information, usually Sunday evening at home. He was vigilant with this blog because we both knew from experience that consistency is one of the key components of success in any endeavor.

Tim loved living in the desert and loved nature, he loved life in our community and wanted everyone everywhere to know about it. He is greatly missed by everyone who knew him. I do believe that his death has greatly impacted our tourist industry. As for me, well I am devastated that he is gone.

I've considered writing about our journey, Tim and mine and hopefully add in some Groovacious News and regain or rebuild rather upon what is left.

“My introduction to all this great music and to ‘the music business’ came from hanging around, and eventually, working at independent record stores. Nothing beats browsing in your favorite store, listening to music, finding something new or old that you’ve been searching for, all that. And without these stores, there’s just no way Wilco would still be around." - Jeff Tweedy
