This week will feature photographer Quinn Jacobson, presenting his unique photography and distinct style. Jacobson explores people and places in society that exist on the fringes of life. WORRIED MINDS are MARTIN MAUDAL, on guitars, vocals and songs, and DANIEL MULLIKIN on everything from cello to banjo - and a few things that most of us have never heard of, like the Sarangi - a really cool Indian instrument that combines the sympathetic strings of a sitar, with a violin that you play with a bow, and your fingernails like a slide guitar. The two met at the Folk music center in Claremont, CA, a town that has produced musicians like David Lindley, Tom Fruend, and Ben Harper. WORRIED MINDS are very much the self-made band in the best James Brown tradition. "James Brown has always been one of my heroes," says Martin. "Not just because he was one of the most amazing performers America has ever produced, but because he was the original Indie!" WORRiED MiNDS are a revolutionary neo-folk duo hailing from Claremont, California. They draw from the deep roots of American storytelling, while combining a penetrating insight into the stories of their own time.
Paul Ortega, of Priscilla's Summer Music Series in Los Angeles says "... intricate chord progressions, voicing and harmonies, intertwined with rich lyrical observation and commentary made for a very inspired set." While the folks at Echo Curio, an acoustic venue in L.A. observed "...by the look of 'em, they took the train, in the empty grain car at the back. These two dudes are reformists in all things, even in folk music, drawing not only from the old, but borrowing from the new and even inventing some tricks in between."
WORRiED MiNDS are Martin Maudal, on guitars and vocals; Daniel Mullikin plays everything from cello to banjo to middle eastern instruments. They met at the Folk Music Center in Claremont, the town that spawned such musicians as David Lindley, Tom Fruend, and Ben Harper. Martin also builds some of the instruments the two play.
WORRiED MiNDS have been building a national footprint over the last few years with tours across the South, hitting towns like Tuscaloosa, New Orleans, Austin, and up into the Midwest as well as occasional forays into the Bay Area.
WORRiED MiNDS are very much the self-made band in the best James Brown tradition. "James Brown has always been one of my heroes" says Martin. "Not just because he was one of the most amazing performers America has ever produced, but because he was the original Indie!" This act takes great pride in the fact that everything good happening for them now was made possible by their own efforts.
Martin adds, "We're musicians first - everything we see around us is what informs the music. A song has to come in and grab me by the throat and make me write it. That means it's usually about something larger than myself."
When asked if he could describe WORRiED MiNDS in just one sentence, Martin answers, " We're very socio-poetical, a bit spiritual, with some twisted love songs 'cause... just 'cause."

on Saturday, October 1st at 7:30. This will be the second time that the duo has performed at Groovacious and the fourth time they have played in Cedar City. The second time being at the Grind Coffee House, and by the time they play at Groovacious they will have played for the final Campfire in the Canyon for the Southwest Wildlife Foundation the night before.

Playing and singing with Honk, Beth toured extensively with Loggins & Messina, The Beach Boys, Chicago and Santana. She has also recorded with Jackson Browne, Kenny Loggins and many others.You can expect to hear selections from her many albums, along with a few surprises; all done in Beth’s warm jazzy, folk style. Saturday, October 15, 5:30PM: ANTIOQUIA is bringing their drum knowledge back to Cedar City, after playing and teaching at Groovefest American Music Festival this past June. They will be teaching drum rhythms from West Africa and Colombia. They have studied and lived in Guinea, West Africa and Colombia, South America and have performed heavily in the Bay Area and toured extensively for four years. They want to expose the beauty of these cultures through their music. No experience necessary! Bring a drum if you have one or one will be provided. Antioquia is playing at Mike's Tavern that night. Birthed in Colombia and bred in the San Francisco Bay Area, Oakland-based Antioquia makes music that inspires raucous dancing and deep listening. With influences ranging from Mahavishnu Orchestra to AfroColombian songstress Toto La Mompasina and traditional music from West Africa, Antioquia’s primary mission is to unite humans in the healing act of dance. Their earnest let-it-all-hang-out stage presence encourages the same from the audience, creating a feedback loop that builds momentum as standers-by are sucked into the dance floor. Peppered with fits of improvisation, bouts of silliness and fiery percussion pieces performed amidst the crowd, an Antioquia set is high energy, captivating, and anything but predictable.
