Groovefest American Music Festival to hold second fundraising Rummage Sale

Feb. 27, 2011
Contact: Tim Cretsinger, 435-867-9800

Press release: Groovefest American Music Festival to hold second fundraising Rummage Sale
When: Saturday, April 30, 9 a.m. to noon
Where: St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, 70 N. 200 West, Cedar City , Utah

CEDAR CITY – The 2011 Rummage Sale to raise money for the ninth Groovefest American Music Festival has been scheduled for April 30, as festival planners start the homestretch to collect funding for the free event.
The Rummage Sale will be held from 9 a.m. until noon at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, 70 N. 200 West in Cedar City , with all the proceeds used for bringing in national musical acts at this year’s Groovefest, scheduled for June 22 to 26.
The sale has proven to be a successful way for the general public to be a part and be proud of Cedar City ’s music festival, raking in $750 in its first round in November through purchase of items at the sale and donations of goods and money.
Since its inception, Groovefest has gained national attention as one of the only festivals of its kind to be organized by a community, be free to the public and feature folk and bluegrass, country, roots-rock, jazz and afro-beat at one location.
As one of Cedar City ’s most colorful and ambitious festivals, Groovefest has also been a viable revenue builder for the city since it started in 2002 as a mere few-hour event with a couple hundred attendees, bringing in $1 million for a huge economic impact in Southern Utah in recent years.
Cedar City witnessed the largest Groovefest crowds at its eighth run in 2010, with almost 50,000 estimated attendants across five days of festivities.
This year’s lineup includes 17 national touring acts scheduled for the main stage at Main Street Park , 200 N. Main St. , as well as local and Utah acts for daily sets and activities.
Like last year, Groovefest will also be joined by the Cedar City Arts Festival on June 24 and 25. This two-day segment of the five-day music festival will provide great music, food, crafts and visual arts in a scenic park setting.
Every year, the Groovefest committee also adds something new to the festivities, and 2011 is no exception. Groovefest Run For the Music – The Quarter Marathon, has been added to the Saturday, June 25 portion of this year’s fest.
The only way that these festivities can take place, however, is through fundraising in the community and advertising from sponsors that have helped make Cedar City ’s largest music festival what it is today.
Proceeds from the Rummage Sale, in addition to the many past and retained financial supporters of Groovefest, will not only supplement the many costs that are required to put on a festival of such caliber, but will create awareness for the event nationwide.
Donations are needed for the sale and can be dropped off at Groovacious, 173 N. 100 West, or Braun Books, 25 N. Main St .
Groovefest is also a great way to advertise a business, through sponsorship with a business name that will be seen by thousands of festival goers.
There are many ways to get your name or business attached to Groovefest. The four basic levels of support are the Magnesium Mandolin Contributors with a donation of $100 or more, Bronze Banjo Sponsors with $200 or more, Silver Saxophone Underwriters with $400 or more and the Gold Guitar Presenters with $800 or more.
A list of this year’s supporters thus far can be found at groovefestutah.com
The Groovefest committee has found other creative ways for the general public to help raise money for the festival, including a drawing for a Dean Heritage resonator copper guitar (dobro) and the sale of a leather handmade guitar hat, made especially for Groovefest.
Both can be viewed at Groovacious. If you have any other ideas, the committee is open to any suggestions.
For more information about the Groovefest Rummage Sale, call Tyler Braun at 435-586-8303 or Tim Cretsinger at 435-867-9800. For more info on the festival, visit the Groovefest website at www.groovefestutah.com, or email groovefest@groovacious.com.

CALENDAR FOR THE WEEK OF April 18, 2011

** Big show!! OLD CALIFORNIO!! Thursday, April 21, 8:00PM at Groovacious. $5.00 at the door.  These guys will be playing at Groovefest this year – this will be a great opportunity to see them before the festival!
Here are a couple of great quotes and descriptions:
"These guys are hillbillies alright but they're Muswell Hillbillies and those crazy complex melodies are pointing forward, away from the ghost of Gram Parsons, and towards a brave new world of their own making."
-Mark Huddle, Trotsky's Cranium / Verbicide

"Old Californio lean as much on the rough, raw, homespun sound of Neil Young & Crazy Horse and the R&B-influenced, but pop-wise British Invasion stalwarts The Who and Faces as on folk and country elements. On stage, the quintet's positivity - so evident in their rambling “Mother Road,” as well as the more down-home “Just Like Joseph Campbell” - was infectious. There were hints of Grateful Dead-style filigree that flashed in the guitar work of Dembowski and Woody Aplanalp and the roiling sound of keyboardist Levi Nuñez. And the dynamic instrumental interplay between bassist Jason Chesney and drummer Justin Smith on the rumbling “Harmony” inspired memories of The Who's rhythm section John Entwistle and Keith Moon at full throttle." - Mike The Knife, MOG, live review
“Wearing the rootsy, organic heart of California on their sleeves, from bucolic harmonies to the traditional country song lines as aired on album opener “Mother Road”, a sense of freedom, one quite possibly inborn in bands of this geographical ilk, has allowed them to faithfully blend a definite sense of time and place (circa ’71 should do it) with a unique approach to what the music of that era means to them personally.”
– Richard S. Jones, Shindig!
"It’s too bad the magazine No Depression is no more, as Old Californio would surely be one of its cover stars. Led by songwriter Rich Dembowski, the Pasadena band masterfully blends folk, country and pop into a rich, satisfying brew. “
–Michael Toland, The Big Takeover

Old Californio are:
Rich Dembowski - Vocals & Guitar
Woody Aplanalp - Guitar & Vocals
Jason Chesney - Bass & Vocals
Justin Smith - Drums & Vocals
Levi Nunez - Wurlitzer & Organ

Who says there’s nothing going on in Cedar City?!!

*This one you can’t miss!!
GABRIELLE LOUISE presents The Muse's Market,
Modern-Day Chautauqua

PERFORMING LIVE AT GROOVACIOUS - WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13TH at 7:00PM

The Muse's Market intermixes Gabrielle Louise's social commentary folk music with the poetry of Panama Soweto, the journalistic photography of Sebastião Salgado, and the fine art of Jimmy Danko and Laurie Maves.
Interspersed at key moments throughout the production, Chris Garre presents environmental philosophy and sustainability solutions ranging from alternative fuels energy to the benefits of eating local food. It's an upbeat, varied show with a strong sustainability theme.
The Muse's Market is making its stop in Cedar City amidst a 5-week West coast tour. The troupe is transported on a tour bus fueled by waste vegetable oil, ensuring a neutral carbon footprint. A bona fide modern-day Chautauqua, Gabrielle Louise offers a production that creatively inspires, energizes, educates and, most of all, celebrates the community of citizens keeping the planet alive through art!
The art of local artist Brian Hoover will be featured, the Downtown Farmer’s Market and other surprises!
Gabrielle Louise, noted for her poignant lyrics and commitment to environmentalism, headlines the show with her folk/American trio. With five albums and three years of national touring behind her, Gabrielle Louise never disappoints.
Tickets are available for a suggested donation of $10, and can be purchased at the door, or in advance through the Muse's Market website.
Gabrielle will be on KSUU Power 91 at 1:00, Wednesday afternoon.
Groovacious is located at 173 North 100 West in Cedar City, UT. The show will begin at 7:00pm.
Come to be creatively inspired, energized, educated and, most of all, to join the community of citizens keeping the planet alive through art!
