Q: How many independent record stores are there currently in the U.S.?

A: According to Los Angeles-based record retail support organization The Almighty Institute for Music Retail, between the years 2000 and 2010, more than 4,000 record stores (including many chains) closed. As of December, 2009, 1,884 record stores remained in operation. The current (2012) total is 1,600.

That's an average of 32 stores in each state of the USA, thirty-two! in EVERY STATE INCLUDING NEW YORK, CALIFORNIA AND TEXAS. CEDAR CITY, UTAH HAS ONE OF THEM!!

Let’s make sure it stays that way – is it a deal?

I just wanted to let everyone know that our dear friend Brian Hoover was sent by Life Flight to Salt Lake City (Inter-mountain Health) due to the discovery of a tennis ball sized tumor in his brain. His surgery today to have the tumor removed is still in progress as of this writing.

You may know Brian for being the singer in the local band Bottled Monkey or as the incredible artist who has helped us out with Groovefest for many years, who contributed his art and music work to the “Cedar Breaks Out!”CD, as well as the Painting and Printmaking professor at SUU.

There are already a number benefits planned to help the Hoover family with their astronomical expenses. They are outlined below, but I offer a short schedule here:
Friday, January 18, 9:00PM:  JUNIPER CITY & SWIFT & SONS at Toadz
Sunday, January 20, 9:00AM – 2:00PM: The Grind Coffeehouse donating all the days proceeds
Sunday, January 20, 12:00PM – 5:00PM: Cedar Skate donating all the days proceeds

If you would like to make a donation, go to any Mountain America Credit Union and donate under BRIAN HOOVER. If you want to donate from out of state, call 1-800-748-4302 and tell them you want to make a donation to the BRIAN HOOVER fund.

Helen Boswell, local author has offered to funnel all of the proceeds from her book “Mythology” (which Brian did the cover for) toward Brian’s expenses. You can buy the book at Groovacious for just $16.99.

There is a press released attached below about details regarding the Toadz benefit show.
Please keep our friend Brian Hoover in your thoughts and prayers as comes out of surgery. He is such a generous, loving person and we are looking forward to his returning to the stage soon and playing his music with Dennis and Chuck. We're sending out positive vibes that everything will be okay, Brian...
If you have not ever looked at Brian’s art, check out his genius here: www.brianhoover.com

So, if you or someone you know would like to be a part of presenting it to Cedar City, please let me know and we’ll get you signed up for advertising! (See the summary below).

With the New Year comes more new music and new shows. In this weekly blast, I attempt to list the music-related events that I know about in our southern Utah area. If you know of an event happening, please let me know as I can only dig so deep into everyone’s calendars and could easily miss something.

** I also wanted to make sure you knew that we have postponed our weekly Wednesday Open Mic until further notice. After twelve years of this very fun event, interest seems to have waned. We will let you know when we begin it again – probably in the spring.

Here’s to a great 2013 and I hope to see you very soon, either at Groovacious or at one of the many live music events here in Cedar City!
