Workshop descriptions for 2013:

Friday -

Erin McGrane and Jeff Freling of Victor & Penny: Ukulele As A Rhythm Instrument

Erin and Jeff will show you the difference between just strumming along and driving the rhythm. Learn these simple but effective strumming techniques and delve into the styles of swing and gypsy jazz. They'll also demonstrate how to arrange songs for ukulele including interpreting the feel and finding useful chord substitutions to help you play more confidently and musically. Bring your Uke!

Peter Danzig of Otter Creek: Mandolin

This workshop will be tailored specifically to the needs of the attendees and can cover everything from beginning to advanced techniques. Peter will be on hand to help solve problems with tone and accuracy, work on basic chords, chopping and advanced picking techniques, and can work with groups on topics as eclectic as finger-picking the mandolin and cross tunings. Peter Danzig is the 2011 Utah State Mandolin Champion and won 2nd place in the 2011 National Mandolin Championship. His clear smooth tone is complemented by skill in arrangement and a willingness to stretch the boundaries of traditional playing. He maintains a studio of private students. More information at www.OtterCreekDuo.com

Mary Danzig of Otter Creek: Fiddle First Aid

As both a classically trained Violinist as well as a Utah State Fiddle Champion, Mary is equally at home in front of an orchestra or in a hot pickin’ bluegrass jam. Years of teaching students of all ages have made her able to identify technical challenges players face and pinpointing simple fixes for any problem encountered. She can develop techniques for participants to improve their tone, precision and speed. Fiddlers leave her workshops armed with an arsenal of tools for improving playing on their own.  She can also help fiddlers learn to back up other players in a jam or band setting when it is not their turn to take the melody.

Saturday -

Marty Warburton: The 5 string Banjo

This 5 String Banjo workshop will offer instruction for beginners as well as advanced players. Topics of discussion and demonstration will include: tunings, banjo set-up, using finger picks, how to buy a banjo, hot licks, chord structure, lead and back-up picking as well as the all important "roll" to get the beginners on their way. Attendees are encouraged, but not required, to bring along your 5-string banjo and ask all the questions you like.

Marty Warburton has won multiple Banjo Championships throughout the country including The Utah State Banjo Championship, The Four Corner States Bluegrass Banjo Championship, The Huck Finn Jubilee Professional Banjo Competition and the Rockygrass Bluegrass Festival Banjo Championship. Marty is proud to endorse Deering™ Banjos.

Ned Evett - Fretless Guitar

Slide guitar takes many forms, with every style of guitar from Fender Strats to Gibson Dobros being used to produce beautiful sliding tones. Spend some time with glass fretless slide master Ned Evett. He has removed the frets entirely from his guitars and created a ' slide on the other side' playing style.

Ned is the winner of the 2003 North American Rock Guitar Competition. Guitar Player Magazine calls Ned the world's first fretless guitar rockstar, and USA Today calls him the master of the fretless glass necked guitar. His new album 'Treehouse;' was produced by Adrian Belew.  A clinic and performance not to be missed!

Water Tower: Bluegrass & Old-time Band Lab for guitars, fiddles, mandos, and basses

Ever wonder what the difference is between old-time and bluegrass music? This workshop will teach you with hands-on experience! It begins with a few basic tunes splitting the class into rhythm and melody sections. In the rhythm section you will learn some essential bass runs and chord strum patterns as well as pick technique. The melody section will focus on perfecting the melody note by note, honing in on basic picking/bow patterns. The last 20 minutes of the workshop will be dedicated to come together as a group and jam with Water Tower! Some basic knowledge of your instrument is required as this is not necessarily a workshop for beginners, but those who want to learn more about incorporating yourself into the band element.

Afro-Zep: Creating an Afro-beat groove, for all instruments

Learn about the history of Afro-beat music and the techniques used to create Afro-beat grooves. Afro-Zep members will teach you how to create an Afro-beat groove. The rhythms of African music are very danceable yet highly complex. Each instrument has its own specific function. Learn to understand how your instrument part fits into the whole ensemble.  This workshop looks at different Afro-beat styles using examples from musicians such as Fela Kuti and teaches how to create your own grooves.
