Friday, July 26, 8:00PM: CAMPFIRE CONCERT IN THE CANYON with KATHERINE MOURE & BEN JAMMIN & FRIENDS at the Cedar Canyon Nature Park.

The second installment for 2013 of the popular CAMPFIRE CONCERTS IN THE CANYON will be held on Friday, July 27th at 8:00 PM. In it's fifth year, this series was originally designed to help maintain appreciation for the Southwest Wildlife Foundation and to create awareness about Cedar Canyon's beautiful nature park. Since its inception, the concert series, which features local and touring musicians, has been a part of the kick-off of the Groovefest American Music Festival in June and continues each final Friday of the month through September. It is now an annual event for the park.

The recently renamed CEDAR CANYON NATURE PARK, was formerly known as the SOUTHWEST WILDLIFE FOUNDATION NATURE PARK. It will eventually house native wild animals that cannot be released, due to disabilities, and the Nature Center that is planned to be built on the grounds of the park, located 1 1/2 miles east of Cedar City’s Main Street on Highway 14. It will provide a permanent home in a natural setting while enhancing the public’s educational experience when visiting the park. There is currently a campaign to build a center, where visitors can receive information, and experience exhibits and programs about wildlife, plants, the environment and local natural history.

Earlier this year, with the help of volunteers and local businesses, CCNP had it's first major permanent structure installed; a footbridge spanning Coal Creek so that visitors will have easier access to the park and the fire pit area where the concerts are held. The north side of the creek bank has also been graded into a walking path so that for the first time, visitors have the ability to enjoy the park from the north side of the park. This path connects the new bridge with the existing city bridge further to the west.
These additions coupled with future plans of the SWF will enhance the visits of those enjoying the park, which along with the many wildlife programs provided by Martin Tyner, the Foundation's founder, have numbered over 150,000.

Martin and Susan Tyner have written a book which gives the reader a sense of what the couple have gone through in their quest to make the Nature Park a reality. “Healer of Angels” is available to the concert-goers and anyone who is interested.
The concert during last month's Groovefest American Music Festival was a huge success, and if that is any indication, the 2013 series should be the best yet. At that concert Martin also brought along a wonderful surprise – a nine week great horned owl that he rescued when it fell from it's nest as a very young baby! Pictures can be viewed on the Southwest Wildlife Foundation's Facebook page as well as that of the Cedar Canyon Nature Park's page.

The Southwest Wildlife Foundation Park campfire pit is found at the south side of Coal Creek, directly across from the new green bridge. Parking is available there as well as at the first waterfall, where that footbridge will take you to the walking path. From there, just follow the trail until you come to the fire pit, just a short distance to the east.

The music will begin at approximately 8:00PM to approximately 9:30PM after the campfire is lit. The campfire concerts are extremely casual and impromptu and participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, lanterns and flashlights. Marshmallows and roasting sticks are a courtesy and provided by Susan Tyner. The show is free, but donations will be accepted.
The land on the park property is open to the public for their use in observing the beauty and natural habitat of local wildlife. The campfire pit may be utilized by individuals and organizations for sing-a-longs and various get-togethers with notice to SWF authorities.

The concert on July26th will feature two acts that are new to the series.
KATHERINE MOURE is a local singer songwriter with a very unique style. She has a song on the “Cedar Breaks Out!” CD, a compilation of Cedar City musicians that was put together as a fund raiser for the Southwest Wildlife Foundation. These CDs will be available at the show.
The local band BJ&F aka BEN JAMMIN & FRIENDS are Ben Graff, Jorden McWhorter, Gordon McWhorter, and Josh Coburn, will strip down from their usual electric style and have prepared a special acoustic set just for the Campfire Concert. They are all from the Cedar City area.
