Record stores are an anomaly in the digital age. But there are stores all across the country that have stayed the course and survived the boom of i products, making them a standout in the communities they inhabit.
In an area like southern Utah, a
record store may seem like an unusual business, but tourists from all over the
world have recognized Groovacious as being something that they find nostalgic -
a memory from the past that is held dear.
November 9, 2012 marks the 20th
anniversary of Cedar
City record store, Groovacious.
On November 9th, 1992, Groovacious opened its doors for the first time. Tim and Lisa Cretsinger, with many years of collective experience in the music business, moved from Portland to the capitol city of Salem, Oregon to open their store. After eight successful years with their business, they fell in love with southern Utah and decided to move their store to Cedar City in October of 2000.
A passion to get deeply involved in the local music scene has allowed Tim
and Lisa to help out and to spearhead many events in the area over the last
twelve years. Groovacious itself has become an institution; a real old-fashioned record store with people who know their stuff and can talk to customers about all kinds of music.
With stores of the same type going out of business all across the nation, Groovacious still keeps their finger on the pulse on what's new and hot as well as what's classic. The store has a large selection of CDs, vinyl, DVDs, tapes in all styles and genres. Music related paraphernalia is also sold.
"To stay afloat, you must stay involved," says Tim. "If we were just standing waiting for people to come into the store, we'd have gone out of business a long time ago."
Tim sites many functions that the couple have gotten involved with or started in Cedar City, such as;
- The weekly open mic is held every Wednesday at the store. This event has been going on for the past eleven and a half years. An off-chute of this event was the Cedar Songwriter Showcase, was extremely popular and ran for over two years.
- Groovefest American Music Festival, a now six-day music festival, just celebrated its tenth year and keeps going strong. The festival is one of the bigger events in Cedar City and adds something new every year.
- Groovacious has helped out with such events as the Brian Head Summer
Concert Series, July Jamboree, Cedar City Fall Fest, various school functions, as well as booking entertainment for various venues in town.
- They started their own record label, Groovacious Platters in December of
2006 with a release by local singer/songwriter, Steven Swift. At the same
time, Groovacious began doing bookings for Steven under the name The Groove
Cat Booking.
2012 marks thirty -eight years that Tim has been in the music business and 22
years for Lisa.
"I've seen a lot change in thirty-eight years, remarks Tim. "But one thing has never changed - that is customer service. People still respond to good customer service. No matter what anybody says, you can't get that over the internet and a download will never say 'thanks for doing business with me'. Whatever shape technology takes, good human interaction can never be replaced."
That is the credo that Groovacious in Cedar City lives by - and they exist
purely for the love of music - their own and their customers.
To give a special thanks to those who have kept them going for the last twenty years, Groovacious will offer a 20% discount all day, Friday, November 9th. A special concert performance by Steven Swift and friends, preceded by "Groovacious First Memories" by Charles Cuthbertson will be held at 7:00 PM with prize drawings and trivia throughout the show.
There will be refreshments served during the event.
Groovacious is located at 173 N. 100 W. in Cedar City. For information, call
Tim of Lisa at 435-867-9800.
